Royal Engineers: is Functional Skills [L2] English a GCSE Equivalent

Anonymous asked a question to Claire W.

I have GCSE Maths Grade 4, Level 2 FS English, 18 months experience on a Level 3 Mechanical and Electrical Engineering apprenticeship [not complete but many modules passed in the 18 months]. I have been advised that I may not be able to join the Royal Engineers without an actual GCSE English.

Hello, thank you for your question.

Equivalents are not accepted when it comes to GCSEs, however because of the apprenticeship you are doing this could supersede the GCSE requirements from the regiment but please be aware this is on a case-by-case basis. It depends on the job role you want to go for, if the regiment needs to fill positions in that role etc.

My advice would be to put through an application for the jobs you want to do, then when you go in to meet your recruiter explain the details of your apprenticeship. You will go to Assessment Centre and if you are successful this is the point where we would reach out to the regiment to see if they would accept the apprenticeship level 3. If not there will be lots of other options available but I appreciate you should go for your preferred role in the first instance.

Put your application in about 6 months before you finish the apprenticeship, it can take some time so this will give you a good head start.

Good luck with your application 😀
