My son would like to apply for officer training. Following training, what would be his long term commitment to the army?

It's wonderful that your son is considering a career as an officer in the British Army!

Training at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst lasts for 42 weeks, broken down into three 14-week terms. Between each term, there are adventurous training exercises and 2-3 weeks of leave.

    • Term One focuses on basic military skills, fitness and decision making.
    • Term two continues the development of leadership skills and has a major academic component. Officer cadets select their future corps or regiment at this stage.
    • Term Three puts the Officer Cadet's new skills into practice on complex and demanding training exercises in the UK and overseas.

The Commissioning Course is accredited by various academic and professional institutions.

Typically, officers are expected to serve a minimum of 3 to 4 years after completing their training. However, many officers choose to make a longer-term commitment, progressing through various ranks and taking on more responsibilities over time. The Army offers numerous opportunities for career development, further education, and specialised training, which can make a long-term career very rewarding.

If your son is passionate about leadership and serving his country, a career as an Army officer can provide him with valuable skills, experiences, and a strong sense of purpose.

    Hi James,

The initial contract is for 12 years. There's a 1 year notice period which can be submitted after a minimum of 3 years served.

Hope that helps, best of luck to your son.
