Jo S. asked a question to Claire W.
My son wants to join when he is 18 our only concern is for any reason he does not like it is he stuck in?, we able to get him out if it gets to a point where he wants to leave? he is at collage when he finishes collage to join he will be 18. Are the rules different when joining up at this age?
Hello and thank you for your question 😀
When your son reaches the point of attesting (taking the Oath of Allegiance), he will have completed approximately 26 weeks of basic training. Before this, he will go through the application process, which can sometimes take a while. During this time, there are plenty of opportunities to learn more about Army life. For example, many units run Army Awareness Activities – a 2-night, 3-day ‘look at life’ experience – which are a great way to help decide if this is the right career path for him.
Up until the point of attesting, if he decides the Army isn’t for him, he can leave the process. However, if he chooses to continue with his Army career, the minimum service commitment is four years. This commitment is required from the age of 18.
I hope this answers your question, but please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any more.
