As British Army Musicians our primary role is delivering musical support to the Army and wider Defence community, acting as a public face for the Army in line with National and Defence interests around the world. This mainly involves high profile musical performances for a broad range of audiences as a member of one of our various ensembles. The core ones are Wind Band, Brass Band and String Orchestra, but we also have Rock, Pop and Traditional music groups, and a multitude of small ensembles including Fanfare Teams.

As a secondary role, the Corps of Army Music always hold personnel at readiness to provide support to deployed Army Medicine. This might involve a variety of duties for which you would receive some specific basic training, for example chemical decontamination drills. Recently musicians have provided mobile testing capability on Op RESCRIPT, the military operation to assist the UK's efforts to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK. There are also wider employment and deployment opportunities that you might have the chance to take during your career, such as working as an instructor in a training establishment or providing individual augmentee support on a broader military operation overseas. However, these roles are applied for on a case by case basis depending on Musicians' interests, career aspirations, rank and experience and are not necessarily dedicated positions.

Unfortunately this means that you wouldn't be able to formally take a secondary role as a Postal Courier alongside being a Musician, so you would need to make a choice between applying to join the Corps of Army Music or the Royal Logistic Corps who manage the Army's postal services.
