To put it simply, it does its job and more.

The British Army's uniform is recognised worldwide and not only does it serve a tactical purpose, but it also does a great many other unnoticed things.

The basic premise of the uniform still stands, with it being the Multi-Terrain Pattern Camouflage as the base for all soldiers and in some areas of the Royal Navy/Royal Air Force too. Alongside this, a coloured Beret and cap badge which will depend on your Regiment, green belt and brown combat boots (Black boots for the Royal Tank Regiment).

Markings on a soldiers uniform can mean anything from but not limited to; The Regiment they are a part of, The Brigade/Division they work under, Their rank, courses they have completed, and even more.

It is up to you to forge this identity, the choices you make in your career and the path you take will be shown on the accolades and much more that are assigned to you as a person and as a soldier.

Further to this, its the basic standard for keeping this uniform clean and tidy. This will be taught to all soldiers in their basic training, and having the pride to look after this appearance will become a great starting point to building your career.

Finally, the uniform of course serves a tactical purpose too. There are variations of the uniform and equipment we carry depending on the situation, the weather and overall necessity. We have different styles of boots, extra layers of clothing, and so much more. All of which will be issued to you, free of charge, to utilise and become an effective and capable British Army Soldier.

I can't add much to Ash's very comprehensive answer but having worn a variety of different uniforms in different jobs prior to joining the army, the army day to day uniform is as comfortable as wearing your PJS (but you have to iron your uniform!). As Ash said, there's so many different options for boots that if you get a pair and they are seem uncomfortable regardless of being in them a week for example you can go and change them and see how you get on until you find a style/cut of boots that fit you.
Wearing a uniform (that is free) also saves you money as you don't need a load of work outfits. Everything in our uniform in terms of day to day dress is thought about; working clothes, rain coat, warm jacket etc - it's great not having to think about what to wear everyday. I hope this helps a little - although i don't think you can get a better, more helpful answer than Ash's above!
