my 1st deployment was to Afghanistan in 2011, i was 19/20 years old and had been in the army 2 years. it was both exciting and scary.
at the end of the day, this is what i had joint the army to do, knowing full well that a tour to helmond would have been likely at some point. it was the result of months of training and tests.
when you arrive in theatre, deploy to the FOB or PB, patrol for the 1st time.. it is exciting.
when things go crazy, that initial reaction is one of fear but the as the saying does.. the training kicks in and you do what you have too..
I was lucky, i never had any major casualties so over all i enjoyed my time on tour.
