Hi Rhys,
Each job role on the army career website will indicate the fitness requirements for that particular role. This will give you an idea of what you should focus on in order to pass the entry requirements.
For example, if you were wishing to join the Army Air Corps, you need to complete a 2km run in 12 minutes, reach 5.8 on a bleep test, carry out a 50kg mid-thigh pull and throw a medicine ball 2.7m. Looking at the above, including a mixture of cardio and strength in your training would be beneficial for improving overall fitness.
If you can comfortably run 5km in 30 minutes without stopping, you should have no issues through your military training. Compound movements such as deadlifts and squats will help improve strength, along with conventional exercises such as push ups and sit ups.
There is an official 'army fit' app, which can give you even more tips and ways to improve your fitness prior to joining.
I want to add that when you join the army, nobody is expected to be super fit. You will have a progressive fitness training programme delivered to you from day 1 of your basic training, and things such a tabbing, or running with weight will also be introduced and gradually built up.
Hope that helps, and if you've any further questions, feel free to ask away!
