Anonymous asked a question to Josh W.
Do you pay for rent & accommodation?, bills, council tax, food, tax and national insurance, clothes, toiletries etc? And how much is everything ?
Hi there,
I will try to cover some elements to your question but others, like the toiletries will be down to your own personal choice. Accommodation charges depend on what standard the accommodation you are living in is but for a steer, my room with a double bed and ensuite is around £190 a month. As someone living in service accommodation you pay a small charge in lieu of council tax but do not pay separate energy bills. Food is available for a total charge of per day of £5.61 which includes all three of your core meals with other options available to chose something more expensive.
Tax and national insurance are in line with all other UK employment and are taken at your salary at source, as is the accommodation charge. You will be issued with all the clothing you need for your job so the only other cost you have are those civilian clothes that you want to wear in your spare time.
Hope this helps!
Thank you very much for you time
Thank you very much for the reply.
How much does an individual soldier pay for tax?
As of now, Privates are paid 25,200GBP per year, how much will like be the take-home salary after tax and housing(basic rent cost) has been deducted?
Good morning,
This is a difficult question to answer as there are soooooo many variables not only when it comes to accommodation but also as you get paid more when you are on exercise or operations or if you are in a very specialised trade and in date with your training.
My rough calculations for tax and national insurance will mean you probably take home between 17-1800 a month before any other deductions or additions
Accommodation costs vary depending on its assessed quality and also whether you are taking a house with your family or living in the block by yourself. Therefore it depends on the camp you are going to and also the accommodation you are allocated. Broadly, the newer the accommodation is, the more you are charged, however these numbers dont change often so are consistent to plan off once you know what they are. They are also SIGNIFICANTLY less than a civilian equivalent. Likewise additions to your wages on operations or exercise vary depending on how many days you have been away during your career or on that particular exercise. The longer you have been away the higher daily rate you are entitled to. Because of this you will have a ball park number that comes in each month but it can vary and sometimes be more than you expect
Sorry, as i know that this will not be the exact numerical answer you were looking for but hopefully you understand the reasons behind why its hard to answer.
Hope it helps to an extent.
It was really helpful Sir!
Thank you so much for your broad explanation.
