What is the main difference between the marines and the army?

originally I wanted to join the marines however almost every combat role I've seen is made out to look like special forces, I just want to know where the differences are in regards to how they operate.

    The Main difference!

The Marine are in the Navy.

I'm not an expert but, the Marines primary role is based around sea and coastal operations. They work in troops of 8-12 and conduct raids on high value targets. They are also the experts on amphibious assaults (think D-Day landings). All these tasks are very risky and so they need to be an "elite" force.

The Army's role is to fight a win wars on land (think breaking into the rest of France off the beaches). This is still risky, but the options on land are more so than on the sea/coast.

There are countless differences between the Royal Marines and the British Army, but the main difference would be role: The Royal Marines are an amphibious force, whereas the British Army is a land-based force.

Comparing combat roles: broadly, the Royal Marines operate small mobile units aimed at actions like amphibious assaults, whereas the British Army utilise a wider range of combat roles like Light Infantry, Armoured Cavalry, and Artillery aimed at actions like conventional warfare.

It's worth noting that both organisations have both specialist roles and their own Special Forces.

Edit: James got in there just before me, so apologies for any repeat information!
