I'm really looking at this from a day to day perspective, which days include PT, what jobs are given out regularly. Just in general what the day to day for a groundcrew specialist is. Also how often are learning credits able to be used. Follow up, what is phase 2 for groundcrew like? Thank you!
Good morning. I will pick this up, as I'm currently an Groundcrew Specialist so know the score.
The role of Groundcrew Specialist is very dynamic, and is a role that will vary considerably each day. In a flying squadron, you will be working when there is flying, which could be morning, afternoon, evening, or the entire day. On exercise, again you will work alongside the pilots and their flying schedule.
Roles will include refuelling of aircraft, marshalling and movement of aircraft, uploading ammunition (more commonly on Ex), preparing kit, other driving tasks, preparing the airfield/ aircraft landing sites, to name but a few. It's a very enjoyable role, especially when you're hands on with the aircraft, or under the disk.
There is of course opportunities for PT everyday, but a lot of Groundcrew conduct their own personal phys in their own time due to the nature of the job role. There are also opportunities for adventure training and sport, especially in quieter periods.
As for Phase 2 Initial Trade Training, it will consist of ASOL (basic aviation soldiering skills), Communication and Groundcrew training. There will also be the opportunity to gain driving licenses (B car license and C/ C+E lorry licenses). PT will be very structured, typically taking place every day. The length of training can vary, but is normally 4-5 months. Factors can impact this such as spaces on driver training, the wait for course post Phase 1, and waits for further trade training.
