Excellent question.

Here in the British Army we respect everyone's right to practice their faith. If this requires an alteration on dress then it will typically be allowed, unless for some reason this impacts operational effectiveness. A good example of this would be if a Muslim male grows a beard, this would be absolutely fine, however if this person was required to wear a respirator, then the individual would need to shave in order for the equipment to work. So yes, if it does not negatively affect the mission, a headscarf should be fine.

You will also find that many places we are based accommodate prayer rooms, if you're somewhere that doesn't have these facilities, something will typically be accommodated to meet your requirements. Again, this is different if it will have a negative effect on our operation capabilities. The same applies to religious events and festivals, so long as our mission is not impacted.

Any Muslim serving in the British Army will soon find that they are treated no different to any other soldier or officer serving no matter what their race, religion, sex etc. and we have no tolerance for discrimination. You will simply be viewed by your abilities and strength of character.
