Hi John,

In my experience all soldiers and NCOs want the same things from their officers, irrespective of cap badge.

They want someone who can lead and manage them and their careers effectively. They want someone who is professional, dedicated, bright and fit; but they also want someone who shows humility, cares about their soldiers development and well being, and is enjoyable to spend time around.

Junior officers generally get taken in by the section commander and platoon sergeant as they sometimes have wild and wonderful ideas that need to disappear. Once they have found their feet and earned the respect of the troops, they are expected to manage the careers of his or her men aswell as planning from the top down.

They don’t tend to lead from the front as they take a step back and oversee.

What physical things do you like to see them doing to gain said respect? And what are major no goes for a young officer? Thank you for the responses so far.

Infantry officers are expected to be at the top of their game. They will lead from the front with fitness standards and navigation etc. On a day to day basis in camp they will so general admin duties such as planning whether it be exercises, ranges or overseas events.
