I’m in the process of joining the Royal Marines which is something I’ve always wanted to do but I’ve just recently found out about 29 Commando and have taken an interest in Artillery. There isn’t much info about 29 Commando so I was hoping someone can explain what they do and the process of joining.
Hi there,
Thanks for your question, and I’m really pleased to hear you’re considering a career in the Royal Artillery.
29 Commando Royal Artillery is a unique capability within the Royal Artillery. They are know as the Commando Gunners and provide offensive (artillery) support to 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines.
They are a regiment of Army Commandos, and are held at Very High Readiness. They specialise in amphibious operations, mountain, desert, jungle and arctic warfare.
They are equipped with the 105 Light Gun, and roles within the Regiment include Gunnery specialists, Fire Support Teams (who are trained to deliver land, air, and naval strike assets), signallers and logisticians.
To become a Commando Gunner you must pass the All Arms Commando Course.
This arduous course is held at Commando Training Centre Royal Marines in Lympstone, Devon. On completing the course, you will be awarded both the Commando Green Beret and ‘Army Commando’ shoulder flashes (badges).
I hope this provides the information you need, but if not, please do reply to this thread with your question.
