Hi Peter, not sure if I'm asking the right person, but I'd like to know most efficient route to the SF not the quickest.

I'm looking to join the marines, but feel the paras may be a better way to do it

Peter, there is no easy or efficient way into the SF world. Regardless of what cap badge or corps you join you will have to serve a few years first before you can attempt selection. The SF units employ from across all branches of the military which shows that there is no efficient or best way in. It is down to the individual and how you prepare yourself for the course. The pass rate for selection is extremely low therefore although ambition is commendable you need to ensure that you initially enlist in a job that is going to provide you the life and satisfaction you need should the SF route not pan out.

Hi, thanks for replying, so it's literally down to me which route I take, the SF is my ultimate goal and I'm fully aware il need to serve a minimum time before I can apply for selection, but knowing I can do that in the marines, army or any other position is good knowledge to have, thanks a lot for your advise

Also I've heard that AACC is a good course to complete as well, can I start with this or do I need to be in the forces for X amount of years before going for it?

The AACC is the Commando course for those individuals who are not in the Royal Marines. It is for individuals who wish to serve in 3 Commando Brigade. It is similar to P-Company which is the pre-parachute course for those wishing to serve in 16 Air Assault Brigade. Both are extremely arduous courses. If you join either the Parachute Regiment or Royal Marines you will complete a much more comprehensive training period that trains you as either a para or marine as your core role. Unless you join either the Parachute Regiment or Royal Marines you will have to conduct all of your initial training and a period at your chosen unit until you get released to attend these courses.
