Hi, how much travelling overseas does this role involve compared to other roles? Thanks!

Marine engineers are often attached to different aspects of the army and navy With a great chance to travel the world more so than most trades

Not just that but being able to work with hundreds of different teams regiments special forces ect will quickly Give you an understanding of how the army works and an idea of some of the experiences and opportunities you will have in the future

Hi, im Pte Goligher and i have been a marine engineer for 4 years now. this is a really good trade for travelling. This is because there are few marine engineers in the army but plenty for us to do so we get reused over and over on exercises and deployments. As kevin says we can get attached to special forces and this gets us everywhere in the world.

Great, thanks! And just to clarify the difference between a Mariner and a Marine Engineer is simply that a Mariner is more driving and navigating and Engineer is the mechanics etc?

  • Anonymous

Ben, yes the mariners are the ones that do all the navigation and looking after the general upkeep of the vessels. The marine engineers look after all the mechanics, electrics, hydraulics etc

George, day to day work can consist of servicing engines, generators etc. Abit like a mechanic for a car but on marine vessels. Alot of training out on the water aswell to avoid skill fade.

    Thank you for clarifying that

Having worked with both Mariners and Marine Engineers, the opportunities for travel are far reaching. I took them to Greece, Kuwait, Oman and Iraq during my two years serving with 17 Port and Maritime Regiment.
