Is it common to be out of country often as a dental nurse? Would I have to live in the barracks after completing basic training? As I currently have pets (two cats). Also the salary listed after completing basic trade training is £33k, is this for once completed basic training and qualified? TIA
ETA- I’m about to qualify as a dental nurse and be registered with the GDC within the next month- does this mean I’d be on the £33k after basic training? Or is that only if you do extra things like fluoride application, imps, ect? My cat would be able to live with my mum during basic training but then preferably I’d like to be able to have him live with me but I’m assuming you can’t have them live in the barracks? (I put two cats in the original because I was thinking of adopting my foster but she’s just been adopted.)
Your wage will match as soon as training is completed. Depending on location as to where you wish to work and where is available then you may live on barracks or at home which is all distance dependant. Authorisation can be obtained for pets but usually requires you to pay for additional cleaning of the room once you leave so it is ready for the next person authorisation is usually given by the Quartermaster but the rules on this this will change camp to camp.
Hi Jordon, thank you for your reply! That’s very helpful to know. I know it all depends on a few different factors but do you know how often I might be needed overseas?? Ideally I’d prefer to stay in the UK only but can accept that sometimes that can’t be helped. I figured being a dental nurse there’s less likelihood of being sent off somewhere else.
There is a possibility of this but they are more likely to be deployments for 6-8 months rather than a posting of 2-3 years. Postings are usually given to those who ask although not always possible so you are likely to be UK based anyway. As for deployments this will be based on need only and is often on a voluntary basis unless the whole unit is deploying in this case you are normally given enough notice to arrange care for pets etc.
Brilliant thank you so much! That’s very helpful and good to know :)
