    Good morning,

The Army selects its personnel based on ability. It is true that different units have different personalities. For example, there are some units to which different sports are important such as rugby and so people who like rugby often choose to join them. With the RHG being as old as it is there are some family traditions that see people seeking to join them for that reason but this is no where near as common as literature and popular culture will have you believe. When these things do happen it does not necessarily mean that these people will guaranteed a place. I was in training with someone who regardless of family history was not good enough compete for a place in the regiment of his choice. Conversely if you do not have these sorts of links either familialy or socially then you would be not excluded If you were better than your peers. My advice is to conduct visits to a number of regiments to see which one you feel most comfortable in. You will be living and working with people for at least 3 years so understanding your future colleagues are is as important as choosing the right role for you.

    Hope this makes sense
