Hi Jude,
The Household Cavalry are only one regiment within the Royal Armoured Corps so the number of officers they take per year is limited by their overall size. If it was a career as an Armoured Officer you were interested in, then it's useful to consider some of the other RAC regiments available to give you the best chance when you get to Sandhurst.
The Household Cavalry do not have reserve element / unit. With the Household Cavalry's role covering both ceremonial and armoured, the closest you will get part time is one of the four armoured reserve units based all over the country with the Royal Yeomanry being also headquartered in London.
Hi Josh,
I'm drawn particularly to the combination of ceremonial and combat roles the Household Cavalry provides, and I am particularly keen with the riding aspect. So far the only reserve regiment that carry out ceremonial duties I can find is the London Guards.
The London Guards seems like a good option, seeing as at the moment I am looking for a reserve regiment. Would it be possible to commission into the London Guards and still have the option in future to become a full-time officer in the Household Cavelry if I decided to become a regular?
Hi Jude,
Yes indeed the London Guards sounds like a good option if you want that balance as a reservist. Commissioning into the reserves would absolutely allow you to then go for a regular commission later on. You would apply for regular commission at a later date, attending RMAS and then expressing your want to commission into the Household Cavalry. You may have opportunity to engage with the Household Cavalry Regiment through your time at London Guards.
