Want to join but being held back by the thought of being injured or even killed. Is it likely of that happening if not how likely would it be?
Hi there,
This is a really tough question as assigning numbers to such events is near impossible as you might expect. Our personnel are engaged in all manner of tasks and operations around the globe and none of them will be entirely risk free. But the same can be said for all walks of life. From my experience, the most common of our injuries are muscular or skeletal and we have an excellent dedicated system that supports rehab from those.
If we want to assign numbers to it and most specifically the most severe end of the risk, then the government report found here (https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/6421786eba5ac9000cb1a97b/Deaths_in_the_UK_Regular_Armed_Forces_2022.pdf) gives you some interesting detail. A snapshot from this report finds that in 2022, the UK regular armed forces had a 62% statistically significantly lower risk of dying compared to the UK general population.
Hope this goes some way to putting your concerns at rest!
