Is a dog handler position something that is generally looked down upon compared to something like a tank crewman?

Absolutely not.
A dog handler will deploy with frontline infantry units and get right in the thick of it.
A role as a dog handler is probably the most sought after jobs in the armed forces and has been for quite some years. I believe there is currently a 2-3 year waiting list.
