Im 16 In year11 leaving school on the 14th of june and im coming out with 50/50 Grades. Im planning on the joining the infrantry i would like to know after basic training do i get to pick what role and regiment i choose (e.g the rangers regiment).Thank You
Great question Subby!
Before training candidates will need to pick which regiment that they would like to join as there are three different courses to pick from at the Soldier Academy which are Guards, Paras and line Regiments. These courses and roles vary in duties, so I recommend you take some time to think and do your research before deciding. Whilst at the Soldier Academy Recruits will make a list of preferences on which Battalion they would like to join within their selected Regiment / Core. There will be opportunities to learn more about the different units and specific roles and locations of each one before making your final request of preferences. Another final factor that will play a part in where a soldier goes after training is the needs of the Army: The ultimate decision on which Battalion you join within your Regiment is also influenced by the needs of the Army at the time. This includes current operational requirements, personnel shortages, and other logistical considerations. To summaries any aspiring infanteer should pick which Regiment best suits them and remain flexible to where in that core the go. I have been part of different units in my career and I have enjoyed each one brining a different role.
Hope this helps, I am happy to answer anymore on this quite important topic that a lot of people might have. Feel free to ask or for anyone else to add to the discussion.
Thank you for the response it has made me understand the regiments and units alot more better however 2 questions. If one had to be a sniper do we do the training in units or regiments and do all regiments have a sniper role/ And does the army allow you to have long hair that can be above your eye brows or do we have to keep short hair and how short/. Thank you
Your very welcome! Aye, exactly, every infantry battalion has their own support company with a sniper platoon. Here is a list on the process to becoming a sniper once you are at your unit.
1. Pre-selection:
- Excel in your unit and get recommendations from your Chain of Command.
- Pass initial fitness assessments.
2. Sniper Training Course:
- Duration: 10 weeks on an assessment course.
- Topics Covered:
- Advanced marksmanship and long-range shooting.
- Camouflage, concealment, and stalking techniques.
- Observation, target identification, and reconnaissance.
- Survival and fieldcraft skills.

This includes excessive layering, designs cut into the hair, or exaggerated styles such as Mohawks. Sideburns should not extend below the midpoint of the ear.
