In light of the shortfall in military personnel, can I at the age of 55 at least learn how to handle a weapon?

Hello. The maximum age to enlist right now is 35 for the regular army and 43 for the reserves. Unless this changes then it would not be possible for you to join. Sorry, I appreciate this is not the answer you wanted.
