Im going to study business in university. My dream is to be a pilot. Should I wait until after university?

Im 17 by the way. This is a personal questions but im unsure on what to do. Ive been to air cadets, learnt everything there is is and I almost got my PPL. Flying for the british military would be a dream of mine. My family dont know about this however and they are pushing me to study something else.

    Hi, thanks for your question.

If you have the opportunity to gain a degree and are in a financial position to attend university then I would recommend doing this before you join the military. There are two reasons for this:

    1) Going to university or holding another job prior to joining the military will allow you to gain some life experience. This will bring a valuable skillset to your military life.

    2) Should you be unsuccessful on the pilots' course for any reason (medical etc) you then have a good level of qualification to fall back on. This may come in handy if you leave the military for any reason.

    Hope that helps,
    Maddie

Ah im so glad you replied. I'm having quite a difficult time here. Im aware that becoming a pilot for the British army is very difficult with only a few cadets going on to become actual pilots. By going university I do have a backup option which is definitely something I am considering. From your point of view, was basic training medicals etc very difficult. I feel as though I can work well under pressure and I have an extensive knowledge about aircrafts, the military and other key information that will help. Despite this, even some of the best recruits dont succeed. I just want to hear how the process was from your perspective. In addition to this, if lets say I didn't pass test with the british army could I apply for the RAF for the some position and still have a chance of getting accepted. One last question if I could, how are you finding the job currently. Was it everything you expected and how difficult is it. I do apologise for all these questions. I was originally going to get my commercial pilots license and that is an option avaliable for me. The only thing is the costs are extremely high and frankly im not looking to pay that much. Furthermore, I have been interested in the military all my life. I know of people in the military and they say it was the best time of their lives. I hope I these questions weren't too silly. Like I said im 17 still trying to find my way around. I know for sure I want to become a pilot but im not quite sure how to become on as of yet. The pandemic really hit me hard. My GCSE grades weren't the best (I never did my exams) and I was hoping to complete aeronautical engineering but they stopped the course at the time I wanted to do it. I'd appreciate if you could answer my questions! Thanks!
