It really depends what you are doing. Training exercises can be anything a couple of days to a couple of months. I was on a Training exercise in Kenya for 7 weeks in 2017. Operational tours can be anywhere from 3 - 8 months, I was in South Sudan on Operations last year for 6 months.
In terms of keeping in contact - personal mobile phones/WhatsApp are still prominently used. The Army also used phone card phones on operations so you can contact home that way free of charge.
James, as Kieran Kieran S. has mentioned above. It depends on where you are deploying. There is downtime whether you deploy on operations or exercise. The country you deploy to will determine whether your phone operator allows you to use your U.K. mobile phone there. If not, many people purchase a sim card from that country that will be cheap for them to use for the duration of the tour/exercise.
