All roles in the Army, not just Chefs, are trained as a "Soldier First". Your role will be your main career, but life in the Army is varied and it doesn't mean that it is all you'll be doing.
For example, as a Chef in the Royal Logistic Corps you may not always be cooking in a traditional kitchen at a barracks; you could be given a map grid reference to a wood block that you need to navigate to, then spend the night, and cook breakfast for your Company using an improvised kitchen that you need to build. Your basic training prepares you for working in this military environment.
