I was speaking to an ex soldier, they said I had to come from money to go through the officer route. Is that correct?

Hi, that's such a shame that they gave you that impression. Officers come from all walks of life; those who have been privately educated and do 'come from money', even Royalty but most individuals go to 'normal' school, some go to university, some don't. In the 18th Century you had to come from money (your commission had to be brought) and only males could become officers but thankfully things have changed 200yrs on!!!
