Hey, good question! All soldiers and officers in the British Army are given a grounding in infantry skills so they are able to carry out their role anywhere on operations. REME mechanics can find themselves working to the rear in what would might look a lot like a garage in civilian street, or they can find themselves far forward, actively recovering and repairing damaged vehicles at the point of need.
It also depends a lot on the type of operation you are on. Insurgency type operations often blur the lines between 'forward' and 'rear' locations, meaning everyone may need to be able to operate in a hostile environment while carrying out their role.
