I’m wanting to join but I have a mental illness . Are there any roles in the army I would be considered for?

I’m in Australia as a permanent resident but I was born in Scotland. I’m in psychiatric system with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. I’d still like to serve in any way I can. Thank you Jack

    Hi there Jack,

The list of conditions that could affect your ability to join can be found at https://jobs.army.mod.uk/how-to-join/can-i-apply/medical/. I am not a medical professional and so unfortunately I cannot comment on each of them or your case specifically. For further information and questions i would a speak to one of the advisors on +44345 600 8080 and they will be able to answer more specific questions about medical entry standards. Note that these are staffed during work hours based on a UK timezone.

As an aside, It is admirable that you wish to serve in any way that you can. Just in case you are unable to join as a soldier there are other ways that you could still serve, albeit in a different role. While soldiers are front and centre when you think of the Armed Forces, we could not do what we do without the vast amount of civil servants who work along side us, or media organisations such as BFBS who tell our stories to the world, and let us not forget the wide array of charities who support our soldiers and their families, your insight into mental health could be extremely valuable to someone who might be struggling. The Armed Forces are more than just a soldier with a rifle, a whole ecosystem enables us to function and every part serves its nation to achieve the same end result. Our enemies deterred and if needs be, our land and people defended.

I wish you the best of luck and i hope, while i dont think i have answered your question, that i might have pointed you in the right direction.

    Hello Robert H.
I contacted number you provided among others and was met with red tape.
Due to a 2020 December application that was exempt due to “ schizophrenia “ which was the first question.
This may be my paranoia but feel the communication channels are compromised but I know I trust you.
I’m from Fife Scotland but I’m in Australia since 2007 for which I haven’t gone for Aussie citizenship and remain permanent.
I’d like to serve in the British army.
It’s not on my end where the whole medical red tape is concerned, I’m trying to serve.
I’d like to be trained in gun play if the situation called for it.

I know it’s not true to life but I’ve played military video games since a young age and the exposure to the battlefield was one of the recruitment forces whether intended or not but I’ve heard there’s some involvement there. Maybe I’m wrong.

Obviously war in life is real and I would need to be trained and meet certain standards but if you ever need someone to go in deep without guaranteed Evac for special operations.

    I’m in

    Cheers

    Jack
