those with a history of self harm are usually made not eligible however there is a possibility that this can be overturned if you appeal it through the National Recruitment Centre (NRC) for this you would need to try to provide as much evidence as possible to go in your favour as to why you should be able to join. For example how long ago the event was the reasons as to why and what help you received or if any other issues have arise as a result. If you wish to appeal the decision please contact your local careers office or the NRC on 0345 600 80 80 to find out more information and they will help you through the process.

If you didn’t receive any help from family, medical professionals, mental health specialists, or anything similar would that lower your chance of being allowed to join?

This would be up to the medical team and we cant advise on what will or will not work. If your application has been rejected you would need to go through the appeals process which can be explained by your local careers office or the NRC on the number given above

Hi, as Jordan said, sometimes it can be overturned but the Army has a duty of care and therefore if someone has self harmed previously, there could be a likelihood of self harm in the future, especially given the pressures of Army service - in basic training (away from friends and family and put under pressure to see how you cope) and military service itself, should you find yourself in a pressurised situation (on Ops, exercise etc). The Army is trying to protect individuals who have a history of self harm and would not want military service to exacerbated anything. Good luck with the appeal.
