I have a partner of 3 years. I'm worried about being based somewhere very far away from her

Hi, this is a really common concern when people are looking at joining the army. A lot of people are really anxious about achieving a work / life balance, and whether relations are possible to keep going whilst your training and in the long term. Long gone are the days when you more or less joined for life, the army was all consuming. Now plenty of people have lives outside the military and the army is seen more as a job than a life style. Depending what capbadge (job role) you choose will depend on the opportunities to be in a job near your partner as some capbadges move round more than others. We all do a 'posting preference proforma' where we can write down the part of the UK we'd like to be posted to and also job locations. If you have been together 3 years you're in a solid, long term relationship and that is important to get reported on our HR system as you would be entitled to accommodation together etc if she wished to follow you in your job role. I suspect your hardest time would be during basic training as you only get a few weekends off in 14 weeks and you'll be very busy which is difficult for people outside it to really understand. As long as you can get through basic training and the pressures that brings to your relationship, once you're actually in the army think of it as just a normal job. I hope this helps a bit. If she has any questions i can try and help answer them too.
