As I write this question, I am a 16 year old studying A level Biology, Chemistry and Law. I am interested in joining the military to serve my country in addition to being able to travel around the world to help civillians who have been injured as a result of war or other natural disasters. My queries relate to how would I get this sort of position? Do i enlist when i finish my A levels and go from there?
Hello Anosh,
All the information on joining as a military doctor can be found on the Army Jobs website.
There are a few ways to join the army as a doctor, and subsequently train as a surgeon.
You can either apply for a bursary while you are at medical school, or you can finish medical school and do your foundation years for the NHS and then join as a direct entrant.
You must then complete 3 years as a General duties medical officer before applying for a surgical training post - you should be aware these jobs can be competitive so there is no guarantee you will be able to train as a surgeon in the military.
Alternatively you could complete your training with the NHS and apply to join later on in your career.
I hope that answers your question, best of luck with your A levels and medical school applications.
