Although the job role is the same you have different responsibilities. As an officer its more about management and you will be in charge of a team of people and will have the responsibility of looking after them and their careers as well. This isn't always something people are comfortable with and often go the soldier route, there is always possibilities to commission later on once you are comfortable with the job role, however you cant go from officer to soldier in the same role so usually works out better to commission later.

To understand the difference more you would be better of talking to your local careers office and they will be able to provide you on more details about the differences in responsibilities between the two.
