So, recent events in the media could reasonably have you thinking that a large scale military event is possible/probable in our near future. This made me think for the first time in my life seriously about my ability to support our military in such an event. Background: I'm a software engineer. I'm not particularly fit at the moment but I am capable of it (I used to be a boxer). I'm well paid with a very fulfilling career and I don't have a particular desire to be in the military per se. Please don't interpret the above to imply that I don't respect the men and women of the armed services. I have the utmost respect for what you do for our country. It's just never been for me. However, given recent events it does make me think how could I support our country and its military if the worst should happen? How would I prepare for this? I would obviously need to improve my physical fitness but what about joining the Reserves? It seem like that would be a reasonable way to get myself trained and prepared. Perhaps that is overkill though? In short: how could I prepare myself to contribute to future military action if a large scale war were to break out? Any links/advice/recommendations would be valued. Thanks in advance.
Apologies, I didn't want this question in 'Interview Tips'. Not sure how to change it now though.
Hi, what a great question and thank you for coming on here to explore this further. If large scale war broke out and we utilised all the Regulars and Reservists then it might well be that, like the Ukraine, they have had to go back to conscription. If this happens then the fitter you are the easier training would be - especially given you'd have a very short time to train before being 'in war'. The fitter you are the easier everything is - sleep deprivation, helping others, looking after yourself, being a good soldier. If you are not interested really in joining the Reserves then there's no point wasting either your time or others as you won't turn up to training and Reservists really do have it hard as they have to give up their spare time / weekends to do Army Reserves. Much like the conscription Ukrainians and those conscripted during WW2 you will be given training on how to use a rifle, how to shoot, basic tactics - i don't think you can train for a 'just incase' - just get yourself fit. As a software Engineer you might well be put to good use with your IT skills anyway - the Army doesn't just need people on the ground. Again, thanks for a great question.
