How is it decided if you will become apart of the lifeguards or the blues and royals or did you decide if so why blues

The Life Guards and The Blues and Royals make up the Household Cavalry. Both regiments have service and ceremonial commitments. The Household Cavalry need to have a roughly even balance of Life Guards to Blues and Royals in order to be able to sustain both commitments.
Where a personal preference is held, the Household Cavalry will try and fulfil this request. However, if no preference is held then the individual will be assigned to the regiment that has the greatest need for personnel.
