As an infantry soldier, how likely and often would you be in really dangerous situations e.g. getting shot at? Also is it likely to get PTSD and suffer for the rest of your life. I’ve heard bad things about the army and the effect it has on you. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Hi there,
This is a really difficult question to answer as there are so many "what ifs" that lead to each part and so its impossible to answer with any degree of certainty. The best way to answer this is by saying that the main role for the infantry is Combat. They are employed to primarily Deter aggression from those who wish to do us harm but also to be prepared to defend the nation and its interests should the need arise. Along side the Royal Armoured Corps they will be the first into the fight if needed. This could well involve being shot at or having to defend themselves against an enemy and while you are employed it could happen at any time depending on the Geopolitical situation. Additionally It would be foolish of me to say that mental and physical injury do not happen through some aspects of service, they do, and this is a risk should you go to war, however the goal of a strong Army is peace and deterrence. If you were to receive an injury wither mental or physical then the Army looks after you and ensures your needs are catered for. I have been in the Army for 15 years and the care soldiers receive has improved immeasurably as new techniques and approaches are developed.
I know this doesn't answer exactly but hopefully gives you more of an idea.
Feel free to ask more in the replies if there are any specifics you wish to know.
Thank you so much for your help, really appreciated!
