Matt R. asked a question to Josh W.
I am considering joining the royal artillery as an officer and am very keen to learn more about the different regiments/what the day-to-day for an officer is like.
Hi Matt,
Thanks for your question. Before I joined Sandhurst I had a variety of choices in mind including the Army Air Corps, Royal Engineers and Household Cavalry in addition the Royal Artillery. It wasn't until I was at Sandhurst that i narrowed it down and then was lucky enough to be selected to join the Gunners.
Three things sold it to me in the end. Firstly, it was the variety of roles that you could do throughout your career and the ability to move between different areas as part of your two year postings. Secondly, unlike others, you remain in a more hands on role for longer as an Artillery officer with your third job usually being in the role of Fire Support Team commander or Tactical Air Control Party. These roles are acting as the specialist alongside other combat units and give you a lot of responsibility whilst remaining in a front line role vs some of the cap badges who might be in a more admin role by that point. Finally, it was the people! When I visited Larkhill as part of my familiarisation visits, I loved the people I met and who were also applying for the Artillery and that was what really sealed it for me.
