Vehicle Mechanics (VMs), as with all roles, are trained as a "Soldier First" and are expected to use those skills on exercise and operations. Naturally, they're not expected to do this as often or to the same level as Infantry.
During Basic Training, you'll conduct a "confidence test" in gas so that you can be assured that your service respirator works. You'll also conduct drills to test your competency. We conduct this training at least annually once out of Basic Training to maintain competency, but it isn't always done in gas.
