Hey, I was just wandering if after training, you get to choose if you work close to home or not? Thanks in advance.

    Hello Lily,

You get to ask, but 'the needs of the Army come first'.

You submit your preferences to apply for roles and they're are allocated based on things like suitability, individual skills, and experience. However, operational requirement always comes first. For example, you may see a job close to home that you like the look of, and you may be the perfect fit, but if the Army needs someone with your skills the other side of the country, then that's where you'll go.

It can seem like a bit of a lucky dip: I've only been sent somewhere I didn't ask for once, but I've known a couple of people who have never got where they wanted. The other thing to consider is that if it's a highly sought after position, there will be more competition.

Another thing to consider is that you'll get accommodation wherever you're posted and you'll make friends where you work, so lots of people end up staying on camp rather than travelling home all the time.
