Hi,

The easiest way to differentiate between Battalions are their role.

There are 6 roles in the Infantry:

Light
Airbourne
Specialised
Mechanised
Light Mechanised
Armoured

Each role will complete core Infantry training but will then specialise. For example in the Royal Welsh we are armoured which means that we use armoured vehicles to move around before dismounting to assault. After learning to be an Infantry soldier you can also qualify to be a Warrior Armoured Vehicle gunner or driver.

The different Battalions also have their own regional loyalties and locations so it's worth checking where units are based.

To add to the above, all infantry soldiers will have complete the combat infantrymans course which is 26 weeks at the Infantry training centre, Catterick.

The parachute regiment will complete a further 2 weeks on P company.

Look at the various infantry regiments on the army homepage, also check out their social media to see where they are deploying and what their currently doing. For example, the welsh guards have just returned from skiing in Austria. A rifle company have just deployed to Belize to conduct a jungle warfare exercise. The whole battalion will deploy to Kenya around September time and have been chosen to deploy to Iraq in March of next year to assist with training and security of the Iraq army.
