I'm a 17 year old girl who will be attending Harrogate army foundation in March, and I have some questions I cannot find online. If I want to be an engineer in the army, will I learn things specific to that role? Can I leave once I turn 18 in October or will I have to stay?
Hi there!
Your training in Harrogate will be your basic training consisting of a 23-week course (including three weeks holiday) introducing you to fundamentals of soldiering. The course for engineers is shorter than the full year as you are going into longer Phase 2 training afterwards. Once you have finished your time at Harrogate it is then that you will leave and conduct your specific to role (known as trade) training.
The minimum length of service is four years in the Army. There is a window at the beginning of your time at Harrogate where you can discharge as of right if the Army turns out to not be for you. However, the vast majority stay as the trickiest part is really getting through the process to get there in the first place! Even if you only do four years, you will have gained a paid apprenticeship alongside other skills, confidence and travel opportunities you will get nowhere else.
