Got declined by marines because of mental health issues as a kid, is there a way around that?

I applied for the marines a couple years ago (16yro, im now nearly 19), however i was declined because i had mental health problems as a child, however im thinking about it now, and due to it being so long ago, is there not any way go still get it, like a test to assess my mental health or something, because i think it's pretty unreasonable to assume that my brain now, at 19, is the same as when i was 12.

Hi, this is a question we get quite often. Unfortunately there is no general yes / no answer as it really is based on individuals. The best thing to do is to apply, speak to your local GP and see what exactly is in your Med records and perhaps talk to them about your mental health and where you are now to get this put into your med records. If you have been off meds or had the help you needed at 12 and things are much different now then i'd suggest it's well worth an application. You can always appeal too as your med records would be more delved into. Really good luck with it all.

I thought i'd just add a personal point too - i got 'barred from all armed forces' when i was 16 for eczema. I never gave up on wanting to join the army and eventually managed it. It took time, lots of letters (at the time) and support from my GP but i've had a great career. Don't give up on it if it's something you really want!
