Going to university through army

Fatima R. asked a question to Josh W.

Hi Josh, My name is Fatim and I am 17 years old. I want to join army but very keen to do my degree in computer science and cyber security before joining army. I am currently an army cadet 1 star. Could you please let me know about how i can do that?

Hi there Fatim and thank you for your question.

There are many routes available to you to be able to support your time at University and ultimately undertake a career in the Army. If you are hoping to be an officer, a computer science or cyber security degree fits very well into the Defence STEM Undergraduate Sponsorship Scheme which offers support to those individuals completing STEM degrees. You will need to pass the Army Officer Selection board but can apply at any point whilst at university or if you have/gain a conditional offer prior to attending University.

If successful, you will receive up to £42,750, comprising an annual bursary of £5,000 plus up to £9,250 in tuition fees for each of three years at university. After university you’ll attend the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, before serving in one of the following: Royal Engineers, Royal Signals, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, Royal Logistic Corps or Intelligence Corps. If it is cyber you are looking to carry on then the Royal Signals or Intelligence Corps would be your best bet!

We also have many soldiers who are graduates, particularly in the fields you are interested in, but support during university is not available in the same way at present.

    Hope this helps!
