20-year-old male New Zealander with an NZ and an Irish Citizenship, currently living in NZ. I want to be an engineer in the defence industry, and the Engineering Officer role has always appealed to me. All the relevant NZ high school qualifications to undertake a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours are present (I was accepted into three courses before leaving school) Also, I've got two years work experience in Heavy Diesel, with a minor mechanic qualification under my belt. What are my potential options for becoming an Engineering Officer in the UK Army? Also, if the above is possible, would scholarship-type opportunities be on the table? Cheers in advance!
Hi Will,
Thanks for the question, absolutely testing my limits on this one. As an Irish citizen you would be eligible to apply through our normal process. Our team can work with you to get recognition for your NZ qualifications to check they are equivalent to A Levels for officer entry.
Most of our officers in the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers are graduate engineers with an undergrad in some form of engineering. However, there are some with other STEM based degrees are even non graduates who do an in service degree. You can find our more detail here - https://jobs.army.mod.uk/roles/royal-electrical-and-mechanical-engineers/engineering-platoon-officer/. Ultimately you would apply to be an Army officer first and foremost and then be allocated your regiment through the Regimental Selection Board process whilst at Sandhurst.
Alternatively, there are fantastic opportunities as part of the DSUS programme to attend university in the UK with funded support from the Army and a place as a mar,y officer at the end of it. You can find more details on that here - https://jobs.army.mod.uk/regular-army/what-you-get/bursaries-scholarships/.
My best advice would be always to get an application in if you are interested as this starts the conversation with our recruiting team who are here to help!
