From what I know, the British soldiers fighting in the front lines of Ukraine are volunteers. But I've heard that the army can just send you there as an order, and you must obey as all orders are in service of His Majesty. My point is that I personally do not wish to fight for a foreign country that is not even a NATO ally. If you are ordered to fight in Ukraine, does disobeying result in a dishonourable discharge?
Hi, thanks for your questions.
British soldiers are currently prohibited from travelling to Ukraine.
As a soldier in the British Army, we're expected to be ready to deploy anywhere at any time to meet a variety of challenges.
But, the Army doesn't "just send you there as an order", decisions are made by the Defence Policy Organisation.
Not following a lawful order could lead to a discharge.
Thank you for your reply, do you go to war once you become a soldier? I am interested in infantry career paths in the army but I fear that I won't be able to progress through them if I get injured or deceased in war or combat.
We are not currently at war, so no, soldiers are not going to war on completion of training. If war were to break out, soldiers are trained to fight and would be expected to deploy if their unit is required.
It's worth noting that war fighting is only one of the Army's many capabilities which includes protecting the UK, preventing conflict, and dealing with disaster.
Injury and death are risks present at varying levels every day in every job, these are not unique to the Army. However, unlike most employers, the Army has some of the best medical support available to get it's people back on their feet and continue their careers, and care in place to facilitate a funeral and welfare support to families should the worst happen.
What do Parachute Regiment troops do besides train to fulfil their duty if there's no active war or battle? From what I understand, their main duty is to be killers that can be dropped off anywhere in the world to fight.
As with every unit in the British Army, the Parachute Regiment do more than just train and fight in wars.
You can learn more about the role of a paratrooper on the Army jobs website, and keep up to date with what the Parachute Regiment have been doing recently on the Army website. I've included links below.
