    Samuel L. Infantry Officer

Hello Fred, you'll normally spend 2 years as a Rifle Platoon Commander once you finish training. Following that it is usual for you to either take over one of the specialist platoons or become a Company Second in Command. In terms of being assigned to these roles the decision is normally taken in conversation with your chain of command and will depend on what positions are open, how you have performed as a Rifle Platoon Commander and any specific skills or aspirations you have.

In short, whilst the decision is ultimately taken by the chain of command, you can have a lot of agency and influence over what job you get selected for.
