I live in South Africa but am a British Citizen, I am concerned about the enlisting process and whether I'd need my own accommodation while enlisting and if you provide accommodation and food post-enlisting process. Could you run me through the enlisting and training process so I can plan accordingly?
Hi Chris,
Good question: you’d need to look after your own food and accommodation whilst you’re still going through the process of joining.
When at basic training you’ll be fed and accommodated by the Army.
At unit accommodation is available and comes out of your pay. Food is normally “Pay As You Dine” which means you only pay for the meals you eat (similar to a restaurant).
Briefly, the application process is: apply online, medical review, career discussion, Assessment Centre, training.
I hope this answers your question.
How much are the standard meals usually when at unit?
As an example, my meals on camp today cost me £6.73.
Broken down, that was: £1.68 for cooked breakfast, £2.29 for a lunch, and £2.76 for dinner. I didn't get any extras, but if I had I would have been charged a bit more.
