The payscales in the army are very transparent and can be googled. (www.armedforces.co.uk)
Army salary after training for a soldier is £20,400 and an army officer after training is £33,426
It's not just about the pay though, in the army all medical and dental is covered (ie we don't pay for prescriptions or any dental treatment). We have chances to participate in adventurous training activities either for free or a really reduced cost (obviously whilst also getting paid), we get 30 days + bank hols leave a year, the army pay all of our pension contribution (so we don't have it taken out of our salary each month). There's loads of other things too so, as a quick answer to your question, you definitely earn enough money to survive on.
