Do you have to have any riding experience as I’m more of a groundwork person and lost all confidence from a bad fall?

Good afternoon and thanks for your question.

Sorry to hear about your fall, hope you've recovered well.

To join the Household Cavalry, you don't need to have any riding experience. A soldier i went through training with had never even seen a horse before in real life until he joined the Household Cavalry!

We train all our soldiers how to ride, from taking those first steps on a horse, looking after a horse and ensuring their well being, all the way up to cantering and riding on state ceremonial occasions.

In some ways, it can actually be beneficial to have less experience as the military way of riding can be dissimilar to the traditional civilian way of riding. So much so that often you will find that some of the soldiers who started the course with no experience turn out to be the top students on the course.

Hope this helps and answers your question.
