Do you get to decide which infantry regiment you join ?

Hi all, i’m Northern Irish and want to join the Royal Irish. I have had family previously serve in the regiment too. I’m just wondering do you get to decide what regiment you join or is it simply up to you go where needed ? Also when does this all get decided ? Cheers

You do get to have a say in which regiment you join. You fill out a form that says who you want to join and the reasons why. These do take into account family history, nationality, where you live etc. That being said competition for some regiments is really high so whilst you might want to go there, there is always a potential that you might not make the cut. My advice is think carefully not just about the regiment you want to go to but also where you second or third choice might be. Then while you are at training look to be the best soldier you can be to out perform others to make your selection more likely.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, as i said the army wants you to find a place where you belong and so will try its hardest to match its requirement with what you want to do.
