Do you get to choose location if you choose a specialty in secondary care?

For example, if you specialise in surgery, do you have to do specialty training in a military hospital (e.g. QEH) or can you choose somewhere else? Also, in specialty training do you live in barracks or not? And are deployed whilst in your training? Thanks.

Hello,
You can ask to train elsewhere, but it may not always be possible. Generally speaking, surgical trainees are likely to train in a large teaching hospital, and at some point a trauma centre, and probably alongside a consultant military surgeon. That means it may not necessarily be a military hospital, but it does mean you are unlikely to be able to train in a small DGH with no military presence already there.
You can live in barracks when training if there is one nearby, if there is not then you will likely be provided with a flat to live in. If you are married you may live in nearby military houses, or again, if not available, the Army will privately rent a house for you.
It would be very unusual to deploy during training as this is protected time. The only time you might deploy is if you either volunteered, or if the deployment would count towards your training. I am not aware of any deployments currently that would be beneficial to a surgeon, but for example, a GP may deploy on a ship for a few months as this provides good training.
